Lithology and Thickness
Sandy claystone. Shales are olive-grey to dark grey, soft, laminated to nodular, micaceous and slightly carbonaceous and gypsiferous. Quartz pebbles are very common in the shale beds. Sandstones are light grey, moderately hard, bedded and fine- to medium grained. The thickness of the Lower Miocene Pyawbwe Fm (Aquitanian) at Pyawbwe village, Minbu Township was measured as c. 2024 m (6500 ft) with sand 30% and shale 70%.

Fossils
Megafossil fragments are recorded at the base of the beds. Lamellibranch and gastropod shell fossils are recorded in the marl lenses.

Depositional setting
This Fm was deposited in estuarine to outer neritic environments.
